As we wrap up another year, chances are you are doing your own year end review and evaluating what went well and didn’t go well for you. You might also be making plans for how to make 2020 even better.

As we go into 2020, you’ll certainly want to keep on top of the latest online marketing trends in order to get ahead and/or stay ahead.

The top 5 digital marketing strategies for 2020 and beyond are …

Let’s have a look at each one …


Video content is definitely not going away anytime soon. In fact, according to HubSpot about 54% of consumers want to see more video content from a brand or business they support.

Having a video on your website (such as your About page) gives prospective customers the ability to “see” and “meet” you so to speak. People will always have a natural curiosity as to who is the person behind a website or brand. Plus videos can work well in keeping your website visitors engaged.

Short videos (15 seconds or less) and longer videos can both be very good for engaging with your prospects. The key is to know your audience.

Video ads can also work better than text ads in most cases. The key is to really engage your prospective customers.

There are plenty of resources to help produce very good videos for your website and/or marketing efforts. VideoBoost and FlexClip are just a few apps that can help non techie entrepreneurs create great looking videos. 

Other Forms of Multimedia

In addition to video, you’ll want to incorporate GIFs, infographics, and other forms of visual marketing in your efforts. After all, our brains tend to process visual information much more efficiently than mere text.

As our attention spans get shorter and shorter, you’ll need really good visuals in your marketing efforts to really catch the attention of your prospective customers.

There are plenty of resources for creating your own images such as Canva and DesignCap.



There is a very good chance that by now, you have visited at least one website with a chat function located at the bottom right corner. Sometimes it’s an actual living, breathing person operating as live chat. Most of the time, it will be a chatbot with preprogrammed automated responses.

This gets into the topic of conversational marketing – using chatbots to engage with your website visitors, capture some of their info, and then guide them with the right automated responses. Since not all your website visitors will go to your Contact page to fill out a contact form nor reach out to you, chatbots can be a very good way catch the attention of your visitors and engage with them.

Out of all the resources I’ve checked out on chatbots, my personal preference is HubSpot. Even on their free plan you get to create your own chatbot.


Influencer Marketing

Influencer marketing refers to finding influencers – people with large followings and often large email lists – building rapport with them, and asking them to market your product/service to their following. Since these influencers have often taken a lot of time and effort to build and maintain trust with their audience, they (the audience) will highly trust any recommendations made by the influencer.

I know in my case I listen to Pat Flynn’s Smart Passive Income podcast. Since he produces a lot of high quality content and has his audience’s best interests in mind, I know I can trust that he won’t recommend just anything.

When starting out, you may want to start small and find microinfluencers (those with small followings typically less than 1,000). Then work your way up to the “big fish”.

There are platforms available for finding influencers to work with. PublicFast and BizSwipe are a few examples.


Going Beyond Advertising

In order to really do well with paid ads in 2020 and beyond, you have to go beyond mere advertising. Whether you’re using Facebook ads or Google ads, you’ll need to find ways to be more interactive with your prospective customers. In fact, you’ll want to create an unforgettable experience for them.

It’s one thing to tell your prospective customers how great you and your brand are. It’s a whole other thing to show them and actually make them feel it. 

In addition to the other strategies mentioned above, storytelling will really help attract prospects and keep them engaged. Donald Miller’s Building a Story Brand is a really good book on the subject.



These are the top 5 strategies for 2020 and beyond. As we all go into the near year, don’t try to do all 5 at once.

Start with one strategy and get really good at it. Or if you have very little time, pick a strategy and have a virtual assistant focus on doing that really well. 

No matter what your business is – whether you are business to consumer or business to business – remember that every business interaction is human to human. People will always do business with other humans they like, know, and trust.
